Tim Carter, who grew up in Southwest Harbor, has built an international career as an orchestral principal, soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician.

He developed an early fascination with classical music and studied at The Juilliard School , earning a Bachelor of Music and later a Master of Arts. His principal teachers included Ayako Oshima, Yehuda Gilad, and Charles Neidich. As a student he performed widely at festivals including Tanglewood, Marlboro, the Kyoto International Music Students Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, and others.

After graduating, he won a blind audition for Principal Clarinet of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra and served in that role (2007–2009), performing throughout Japan. He has also appeared as guest principal with leading Tokyo ensembles (New Japan Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo, Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo) and collaborated with members of the Vienna Philharmonic (Toyota Master Players). As a soloist he has earned major prizes, including unanimous 1st Prize at the Japan Clarinet Association’s Japan Clarinet Competition, 2nd Prize at Japan’s 24th Wind and Percussion Competition “Kanda,” and 2nd Prize at Germany’s Freiburg International Music Competition.

Beyond standard classical repertoire, he creates new arrangements of iconic works, explores multi-media presentations, and has performed amplified clarinet in pop, jazz, and gypsy-rock fusion styles. His 2016 album Clarinet Reinventions (Fontec) features arrangements and became popular in Japan. He resides in Kanagawa near Tokyo, teaches clarinet and music at international schools and as Assistant Professor of Clarinet at J.F. Oberlin University (Tokyo), and regularly gives masterclasses and clinics. He continues to perform as soloist and chamber musician in Japan, China, the United States, and elsewhere.
